Keeping “Cool” at Disney World

Heading to Florida this summer or thinking about the possibility of a trip next summer? When you feel a little like Olaf when the sun is hot, here are some tips to help keep you from melting!

  1. You need to visit the parks early and late. The best thing to do is to avoid the parks during the hottest part of the day. The afternoon is when it is the warmest, the most crowded, and where you’ll find the crankiest park guests. If you’re there when the park opens, you’ll be more comfortable and then take a break once the afternoon rolls around. Go swimming at the resort, take a nap, just relax, and get refreshed. Then you’ll be ready to head out again when the sun goes down!
  2. Stay hydrated. Order a case of water to be delivered to your room via the Garden Grocer. Freeze a couple of bottles and keep those in an insulated bag along with other bottles. When they melt, you’ll have a second round of cool drinks. Remember that all quick service locations provide cups of ice water free of charge. If you don’t think you’ll like the taste of Florida’s water (I don’t mind, but I hear others do), then bring flavor packets to add to your cup.
  3. Take a “time out” at one of the lengthier attractions where it’s air-conditioned, such as the Country Bear Jamboree, Mickey’s Philharmonic, or the Hall of Presidents. Some of the live shows have air-conditioning too! And the ones that don’t, still have shade so it’s nice to linger there a while.
  4. Bring your own cooling towels and misting fans. They will be much cheaper than purchasing them in the park.
  5. While in Magic Kingdom, don’t forget to play around at Casey Jr. Splash ‘n Soak Station, by Dumbo the Flying Elephant! Dad can take the kids there while Mom shops in the air-conditioned Big Top!
  6. Plan your meals at times when you will need a break from the heat. Everyone will feel better cooling off and filling their tummies.
  7. Enjoy the water rides like Splash Mountain and Kali River Rapids.
  8. Snacking on a Mickey bar or Dole Whip couldn’t hurt!
  9. Dance in the rain… Florida is known for it’s sudden downpours, so as long as there’s no lightning, just go with the flow and get soaked!
  10. Pace yourself. It’s better to have a longer vacation where you can come and go to the parks without the pressure of fitting everything into a quick trip. Get the most for your money by staying as long as you can. The difference of a 5-day adult ticket and a 10-day adult ticket is just $50. Ten bucks a day to enjoy the parks 5 days longer? Oh yeah!
