Traveling is a wonderful way to open your mind to new places and new experiences, but for some, the idea of leaving the comforts of home can create a lot of stress.Β The thoughts of “what if” and worries about what could happen are common sources of travel anxiety.Β But you can still take back control of your thoughts and overcome these worries with a few helpful tips.

Travel Anxiety Before You Leave Home
If you are feeling anxious while anticipating your trip consider these strategies:
- Β Remember Why – Think about why you chose to take this trip.Β Is it because you’re celebrating a special occasion?Β To experience a new adventure?Β To see a place you’ve always dreamed of seeing?Β To cross something off your bucket list?Β To spend quality time with your family?Β Most likely, you have a very good reason for choosing this vacation.Β Imagine yourself in the place you are visiting, feeling relaxed and smiling.Β Keeping that image in your head and remembering your “why” will calm your anxiety.
- Think About the Future – Imagine yourself in one year.Β If you cancel your plans, what will you be thinking?Β Most likely, you would be filled with regret so remind yourself that even though it may seem scary now, the feeling of regret would be worse.
- Do Some Homework – Learn about the people, food, important sites, etc. at your vacation destination.Β The more excited you are about your trip, the less likely anxiety will creep into your thoughts.Β Also, when you know a lot about something, it gives you a sense of empowerment.Β Eliminating some of the unknowns can really reduce anxiety.
- Plan, Plan, Plan – A lot of times anxiety can come from a feeling of not being in control.Β If you have a solid plan to follow, it can improve your excitement about your trip.Β Using a travel agent is a great way to have someone else plan everything for you, relieving so much of that stress.Β Ask your travel agent for an itinerary and instructions for each leg of your trip.Β Having these handy will help put your mind at ease.
- Virtual Packing – Make lists for items you want to pack several weeks before your trip, so you can keep adding to it as you think of things.Β Then as your trip approaches you’ll have a thorough list of things you want to bring.Β Also, make a list of things you need to do before your trip like arrange a pet sitter, withdrawal cash, turn down the thermostat, etc..Β Crossing things off of a list gives you a sense of accomplishment and being prepared – both good feelings!

Travel Anxiety During Your Flight
- Travel with Snacks – Pack some small snacks in your carry-on.Β Low blood sugar can make anxiety worse.Β Knowing you have some comfort food in your bag goes a long way.
- Plan Some Entertainment – Bring that new book you’ve been aching to start.Β Β Have a movie downloaded that you’ve been anticipating watching. You may even find yourself looking forward to getting settled into your seat on the plane!
- Taking Off – If you are someone who dreads the feeling of taking off and actually flying.Β Remind yourself that many other people feel this way too.Β You’re not the only one.Β Keep your destination and all the fun you have waiting for you in the forefront of your mind.Β Practice deep breathing and relaxation techniques during takeoff.Β Suck on your favorite type of candy.Β Simply close your eyes and listen to your favorite music in your headphones.

Anxiety While on Your Trip
- Make a Friend – Participate in activities at your vacation destination.Β Meeting new people and sharing experiences helps build your confidence.
- It’s Okay to Make Mistakes – No vacation is ever perfect.Β Go with the flow and give yourself permission to have a less than perfect trip. Avoid feeling disappointed and just make the best of any situation that may occur.
- Take a Break – If anxiety comes creeping in, take a few hours or a day to just relax and recharge.Β When you stay on the go, exhaustion can set in and add to anxiety.Β Enjoy the amenities of your accommodations – the pool, spa, watching a movie, a quiet walk around, or even just a warm bath.Β Then you’ll be ready to explore the next day.
- Avoid What Triggers Anxiety – If crowds, loud music, or darkness makes you anxious, avoid those situations.
- Call Home – Sometimes just talking to a familiar voice can ease worries.Β Share your journey so far and ask what you can so “for them” as a mission for yourself!Β With international plans available on most cell phones, it’s very easy to keep in touch!
- Pause to Post on Social Media – If you need a reminder of the fun you are having, post about your adventures on social media – include some fabulous pictures!

Travel anxiety is real and there is no need to feel ashamed.Β With the right strategies and the help of others, you can overcome it!Β Face your anxiety.Β Acknowledge it and attack it.Β Then you will be ready to experience all the fun and adventure that traveling outside of your comfort zone has to offer!
